Greenwave Academic Performance (GAP or "G-Block") and Teachers As Advisors (TAA) Schedule

Hello, Everyone!
Here is the message sent to us from Mrs. Miranda Banks, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction:

Explain to students that on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday they are to report to the instructional location where they have been escorted (ELA and Mathematics). Wednesday is HOMEROOM/TEACHERS AS ADVISORS day. They are to report to their regular homeroom teacher. G-Day teacher will assist homeroom teacher with homeroom on Wednesdays. In essence, G-Day and G-Block teachers will share those students all year.

Here is the information from the School Improvement Grant (SIG) on the Teachers As Advisors (TAA) Program (Wednesdays):

The TAA program is an effort to:
  • Support high expectations for students;
  • Guide the process for expanding opportunities for students to set goals;
  • Teach goal-setting strategies; and
  • Produce each student's Five-Year Academic Plan.
    • The customized Five-Year plan is for all four years of high school, plus one year of the student's post-secondary educational, military, or career options.
    • The TAA program is supposed to increase post-secondary enrollment rates by students in the district, thereby building academic capacity.
More information/job-embedded Professional Learning from the Georgia Department of Education is forthcoming on this; Mrs. Tatmon and the Guidance Department have been working diligently on providing the teachers with activities.  I hope this information helps to clarify any confusion during the G-Block session.

Take Care,
Kim

I think G-block must be about collaboration.
Collaboration is communication, like an ant mound, all ants communicate with each and they all get the job done; without communication there is no collaboration, only chaos. Collaboration is also team work; all members must play their part in order to reach the common goal, which makes obvious the fact that in collaboration there must be a common goal or objective.

I do not quite understand what is expected from us some of the time with the activities we are doing and would appreciate doing them as a faculty first before we try to use them in the classroom, so we know what type of questions to expect and how to potentially answer them. Otherwise I feel like just a robot working through some activity that I may or may not understand. The other issue I’ve experienced is the reluctance of students because they are unsure of how the grading will take place with the G-Block so far.

I am excited to see the "Five Year Plan" and not just a four year plan. It's so important that we help our student set up a plan for their first year outside of high shcool. So many times it is forgotten, but are we really doing our jobs if we are only concerned with the four years that we see these students? I would think not... becasue you never know, we might work beside some of them one day!

TAA is designed to help the students to keep up with their GPA, set goals, and follow through with those goals with the help of their advisors and counselors. Most students don't have a plan and do not know the steps to take to make post secondary plans.

G block can be very helpful to 12th grade students in preparation for graduation. Students should not wait until the last minute to prepare for life after Spencer. By the end of the first semester, students need to have a blue print for their immediate future.

Teachers as Advisors are an excellent partnership with Professional School Counselors. There are several elements that must exist for success:
1. There must be clarity and purpose of the goals to be accomplished
2. There must be committment to the pupose and resources to accomplish the goals
3. There must be strong leadership that is supportive, informative, and progressive with all customers (buy-in).
4. We don't have to "Wait for Superman". We are the Super Men and Women to direct our students to the next level.

The new improvement plan allows the students to be exposed to key life skills informatio. They also receive repitious material on core classes that will increase their conprehension skills. They also get to collaorate with teachers that they dn't normally come in contact with on a daily basis.

G-block is essential to the academic success of our students. The students I work with are lacking a plan and some are behind in their course work. I tend to pull students from my case load and work with them individually. I am given the oppurtunity to work with them, help them catch up in their classes, and meet their needs on an individual level.

I understand the vision of the Five year plan and too feel that properly prepping kids for what comes after the 4th year is key. However, I'm not sure everyone is on the same train going towards the same destination. It seems that some things are unclear therefore causing confusion. I hope since this is all so new we as a TEAM will be able to sort through and get it together soon.

My G-Block consists of the alternative education students who have not passed the GHSGT in English and/or Writing. I was pleasantly surprised to see their elevated sense of urgency as we studied and reviewed concepts related to the test. Several students are putting their all into passing the assessments. One young lady works so hard that I already know that she will be my special senior when that night arrives. Her efforts to be an upstanding student confirm my belief that all SPED students should be given the opportunity to take the tests.

I'm happy to see a plan that will enhance (all) student learning, if implemented properly. We should not forget last year's plan of enhancing (some) student learning after school and on Saturdays, compared to (all) students in front of an instructor during G-Block. This plan could be the ticket to AYP success, if given a fair chance to work! When all the kinks are worked out, we may have a success story on our hands.

G-Block, What can I say. It is what it is, an enhancement for student achievement. Georgia Virtual school on the other hand has it technical problems, then problem occurs in the G-Block, other wise, Great Idea!
